Random Roots: where I share things that I love in the hopes you’ll enjoy them too. This time is about rest and a few links for your weekend.
Hey there and yay for Saturdays! I’m stopping by with a short reflection and a few favorite things from the week, also known as Random Roots. I might try doing a Random Roots post once every few weeks.
In hindsight, this week I had to work on slowing down and not stressing out about the future: deadlines and to-dos and schedules and plans. They take up so much space in your brain, you know? Space, that, when I think about it, I’d rather fill with friends and family and God and good books and so many other things. Not that schedules aren’t important. Or that goals and plans don’t matter. But when they’re the only things swirling around in your mind, it’s hard to tune in to when you need rest.
Not just sleep.
Reading my Bible and praying. Deep conversations with friends over good coffee. Journaling. Constant, ceaseless busyness is a joy-zapper. It’s why I have to intentionally set aside time for restful activities. Time where my planner is far away and my to-do lists are set aside. Set aside somewhere I can pick them up again, but not until I’m rested.
When I was in my eating disorder and disordered eating phases, that constant, ceaseless busyness was my ever-present companion. It usually took the form of counting. Counting calories and carbs and fat grams and minutes of exercise and things I now think don’t matter.
Since I’ve let go of those joy-zapping preoccupations, I’ve learned when I need rest. It’s humbling to realize that it’s a lot more often than I think.
But. All that to say, I’m super-da-duper grateful for all of the things on my list. And I’m also grateful to YOU for reading!
Good coffee during better conversations with the best friends. I so quickly forget how restorative it is. I’ve been thinking I should schedule time for it on a regular basis. Maybe you want to do the same. We can do it together!
Vests. I’ve been wearing them nonstop. So warm! But not so bulky that you can’t walk through a room without knocking over a lamp. This one looks gorgeous. The diagonal zipper and those colors!
Mini galettes. I love galettes. To me, pie > cake, and galettes are basically pies with less work. And they’re supposed to be rustic, so forget perfectly trimmed and crimped edges. And mini galettes? Even better because you get a whole one all to yourself. We have guests coming over for lunch tomorrow, and I’m making this recipe. Nom.
Breakfast food. Yes, I’m still on my breakfast-food-all-the-time kick. As proof, I’ll close with this lunch I had this week: a waffle with sunflower seed butter from Trader Joe’s (I could eat the stuff by the spoonful. Actually, I do.), a dollop of yogurt, and apple slices.
Have the best weekend, friends!
